As strange as it may sound, and somewhat morbid – this is a true story coming out of Wiltshire England.
So, eighteen piglets were rescued from a barn fire earlier this year by the firefighters at the Pewsey Fire Station. Sounds like a good story so far, right? Well… thanking the firemen, the owner of the piglets Rachel Rivers, turned around and made those piglets into little tasty sausages. Then dropped them off at the fire station for the Firemen to sample. BBC Reported that Rivers was extremely grateful for their rescue!
The Pewsey Fire Station thanked the owner of the farm by posting of Facebook that they were extremely grateful for the samples. However, this sparked outrage from animal rights activists, and as such it was removed.
PETA has plans to send the fire station a package of vegan sausages “so they can see how easy it is to truly be heroes for pigs – by sparing them all suffering”. It’s true I suppose, that the piglets were no better off being serves as sausages than they were burning in that barn fire. There’s something slightly wrong with the idea of eating something you saved. Especially then they are so cute.
Lets’ get real for a moment though, the piglets were going to be turned to sausages anyway. I’m sure being put down relatively humanely was better than burning to death in a fire. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. Still slightly morbid to think that they were eating the very thing they saved just months ago. Rivers does report that she gave the pigs the best life possible while they were alive. I’m sure they were very happy with their life and the fact that they didn’t die in a fire.
