A recent photo of a man kneeling in protest during the emotional taps ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has sparked recent outrage on social media.
It’s one thing for a sports team to do this in protest during a game. It is disrespectful, and disgusting, but it’s free speech. However, it is something completely different when someone goes out of their way to disgrace the final resting place of soldiers. Soldiers who fought and died for the very freedom of their ability to protest. The photo was taken on September 27th at Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Reportedly during the Taps ceremony.

For those who may not be aware “taps” is a song, by bugle, played at sunset, funerals, and flag ceremonies.
The photo shows a man supposedly in protest as the song plays. While it is unclear why the man was kneeling while all others were standing, everyone else is under the assumption it is in protest. This is due to the recent movement by the NFL to kneel during the national anthem to show protest. It’s not a far stretch to assume this is for the same.
The trend of “kneeling” during the national anthem was started by Colin Kaepernick last year. However, it is still unclear what his initial intentions were, as he changed them more than the normal person changes their shirt! However, the main reasons for his protest were police brutality, and race inequality.
There is a protocol at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
That protocol is that you stand during the ceremonies taking place there. In fact, if you don’t stand, the Marines on watch may address you and demand that you stand. It’s not too clear if this man was told to stand or allowed to kneel, but one thing is for certain: This situation has gotten way out of hand and is now disgracing the dead. No matter how you feel about the country, that is your right and freedom.
The haunting, yet moving video of the taps ceremony at the Arlington Tomb of the Unknown Soldier:
Some of the reactions on social media were very appropriate, anger and frustration.
Disgusting? That's a mild way of puting it.

Here is a zoom of the full image (also found below). You can clearly see everyone standing and he is the only one kneeling.
